Current Listening: For those of you who do, or don't know, I was an art teacher for a number of years at a summer camp in my hometown. I worked with kids from the ages of 8 - 13 and recently a couple of the older ones have friended me on Facebook.This got me to thinking. The last time I saw many of these kids, I was showing them how to do awesome cannonballs and jack knife's off of the diving boards; now they're approaching the age where they're going to start making decisions about their lives.
So what would I show them now? - Stay in school, get good grades, go to college, avoid having to take out student loans (as much as humanly possible) so you don't get stuck in a perpetual state of stuck post-undergrad. Don't ever lose sight of what you want to do in life. Cultivate a good work ethic. Use condoms.
Don't read the news, but don't be ignorant of what's going on around you. If you play an instrument, don't stop, if you don't play an instrument, start. Enjoy spending time outdoors, exercising etc. It's amazing how fast your body will change once you're post high school and you'll pack on 30 lbs before you realize your metabolism stopped. Learn how to change a tire.
Go to museums. Learn how to clean, do laundry, cook, it'll make you a great roommate and an even better partner. If you have a credit card, or get one, pay it off completely every month. Books, magazines, blogs, whatever. It's better than watching TV.
Use public transportation. The stories you'll get alone are more than worth it. I'm sure I could think of many more of these, and maybe I'll add to this list, but for now, I think this is a good place to start. Go forth and conquer!
