The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) has added more muscle to its Do Not Disturb (DND) initiative. The do not disturb (DND) app enables a person to report the numbers from which unsolicited commercial calls and spam messages are received so that the telecom regulator can stop them. TRAI had launched the mobile application to commemorate the completion of 20 years of the regulator’s formation. The first version of the DND app was unveiled to the public in August 2016. Then in June this year, the company announced the version 2.0 for DND. TRAI in June had launched three new apps to help customers rate quality of services, speed and performance.
The three new apps – Mycall app, MySpeed app and ‘Do not disturb (DND 2.0)’ app was launched with an aim to achieve more transparency between the consumers and the service providers. The DND service app will enable users to register their mobile number under DND to avoid unsolicited commercial communication/telemarketing calls/SMS, the sector regulator had said. It has to be noted that users have complained about a lot of issues plaguing the DND app. While the app is not available on Apple iOS devices, it also does not get the support of many Android smartphones as well. The rating of the app on Android Play Store is quite low and most of the users have reviewed it by saying that the app does not serve its basic purpose most of the times- that is to blacklist blocked calls. We hope that TRAI announces some updates to the app after clearing out the bugs, as a well-intentioned service like this can have a lot of takers.
