“Saraswati Chandra” is not a movie that too many people remember now. This lead actors in this movie were Nutan and Manish (who?) and it was a Black and white movie in an era when colour movies had become the vogue. The movie itself created no ripples, but its songs certainly did. It had one memorable song after another appearing in the movie at regular intervals while one watched the movie, which few people did. This particular song “main to bhool chali babul ka desh pitya ka ghar pyaara lage” is a song based on the folk dance of Gujarat. Lata has sung the lyrics of Indeewar beautifully. Listening to this song is enough to visualise that the singers must be performing a joyous folk dance, and that is what it turns out to be when one watches the picturisation.

It is a wonderful folk song based song which has been picturised nicely too. This must have been one of first occasions when Bolywood movie watchers must have been exposed to this folk dance of Gujarat. I have listened to this song/ watched its picturisation a few times today, and I am still dazed at the wonderful song /dance. I would like to beg to differ on the above review.
The movie was a big hit and was based on Saraswatichandra, a landmark Gujarati novel, by Govardhanram Madhavram Tripathi, a famous author of early twentieth century Gujarat, The novel, written in five parts, narrates the lifestyle and ideology of people in the early 20th century. It depicts the social fabric of that time: extended family life, the value system, customs and traditions. It speaks about ideals, sacrifice, duty and love that transcends desires or physical needs.
The last part of novel is extremely philosophical and created ripples in the intelligentsia of those times. The novel got rave reviews and is highly acclaimed and is being studied in literature subject.(Gujarati) The movie got 3-4 national awards and a few filmfare awards. At times (in fact most of the times) I feel sorry for the new generation who have not seen the old movies, the black and white movies that are gems. They are missing the classique part of Indian culture, music, ideologies, values, creativity And when the reviews are not in corresponding with the facts, I do get a little disturbed. So kindly pardon me if my mails come out to be a little strong.
Maya ji /Atul ji, SARASWATICHANDRA( 1968) was a movie based loosely on the famous Gujarati Novel by the literary giant of Gujarat,G.M.Tripathi( to 4-1-1907).He was such a poular writer that 1885 to 1915 period is called Goverdhan Yug in Gujarati Literature. The actual novel was written and published from 1887 to 1901 in 5 parts.
It is ironical that contrary to his progressive reformism,Tripathi was against widow marriage and hence in his novel,there was no marriage between Hero and Heroine,even when her earlier husband dies. Saraswati chandra was the last Black and White film of Bombay filmdom. The film was not a runaway success nor it created any records,despite excellent acting by Nutan. In 1969,it got National awards for CINEMATOGRAPHY and BEST MUSIC(Kalyanji Anand ji).It received ONLY ONE FILMFARE Award for Best Dialogues(Ali Raza),contrary to beliefs that it got many awards.
It’s best known and most popular song ‘Main to bhool chali” isNOT THE FIRST GARBA STYLE song/dance in Indian cinema.This honour goes to ‘KANHA BAJAYE BANSURI AUR.’ by Lata and chorus in film NASTIK (1954),Music Director-C.Ramchandra. It is only since late 90s onwards,when Garba Dance started getting organised on large scale in various cities in India,the popularity of ‘Main to Bhool chali’ increased many folds.
